Job Context:

HI is looking for some Prosthetics and Orthotics Technician for its Project Inclusive Emergency Assistance to Crisis-affected Rohingya Population in CXB and BC, Bangladesh; Funded by UNHCR," with the Handicap International—Humanity & Inclusion.

Type of Contract: Fixed-Term

Duration of the Contract: up to 31 December 2025.

Line Manager: Project Manager

Reporting to the Project Manager the Prosthetics and Orthotics Technician contributes to the implementation of the mandate and the 10-year strategy of Humanity & Inclusion in the country where s/he is based. The Prosthetics and Orthotics Technician contributes to the implementation of his/her project, ensuring the optimal quality and the impact of the project. S/he works closely with the programme technical team.

Responsibilities:

Missions/Responsibilities

Mission 1: Operational implementation

Undertake measurement, fabrication, production, and delivery of prosthetics & orthotics (P&O) devices:

  • In close collaboration with the rehabilitation officer and assistant, identify and assess the person with disabilities who require P&O services at HI implementing areas of Cox’s Bazar.
  • Provide appropriate training, assessment, and follow-up of individuals with the device by performing the necessary technical checks, initial standing and gait training, and providing information about the use, maintenance, repair, and replacement times, while involving caregivers and beneficiaries' families.
  • Assure all people with disabilities receive quality prosthetics and orthotics, both in workshops and on the field as per requirements
  • Take into account contraindications and precautions related to the measurement, fabrication, production, and delivery of the orthotic and prosthetic devices to ensure the beneficiary's safety during the service provision. (DO NO HARM).
  • Fabrication of the orthotic devices, like hand splints and AFO, by using low-temperature thermoplastic (Orfit/Technofit).
  • The basic repair of Prosthetic and Orthotic devices such as AFO, KAFO, Hand splint, etc.
  • Fabrication of low-cost and custom-made orthotic devices such as Gaiter, Lumber belt, arm sling, etc. by using steel strip, cotton, cloth, Velcro, etc.
  • Fabrication or adjustment of shoes and sandals—height adjustment, Arc adjustment, etc.
  • Custom fitting and adjustment of ready-to-use orthotic devices such as AFO, Lumber Belt, etc.
  • Repair and maintenance of assistive devices such as a wheelchair, crutch, etc.
  • Fabrication of low-cost positioning devices such as corner sitting, CP chair, Standing Frame, cylindrical and incline wedge/cushion, etc.
  • Follow and respect the policies and procedures of P&O service provision laid down by the rehabilitation TU and management.
  • Maintain individual files for each person with a disability receiving P&O devices and carry out regular follow-up as per the requirement of the particular person.
  • Maintain all records about service delivery.
  • Periodic field visits for follow-up with the user and find out the further development of the devices.

Procurement

  • Support to Plan & advise on the installation of equipment in the workshop
  • Assist and follow up in the procurement of the equipment and materials as required for the workshop production.
  • Support to prepare a proposal on orthosis material & relevant purchases and quality checks of the materials.

P&O Workshop Setup

  • Set up the P&O workshop as per accepted specifications.
  • Ensure the workshop is barrier-free for the easy access of people with disabilities.
  • Ensure all safety measures are maintained within the workshop to reduce hazards in the operation of various machinery and equipment.

Workshop Maintenences

  • Ensure effective and efficient P&O workshop maintenance.
  • Advice to operating management on various costs related to P&O materials, equipment, maintenance, training, and service delivery.

Coordination with Rehabilitation Team

  • Maintain necessary coordination with rehabilitation therapists.
  • Ensure required gait training is provided to the clients after prosthetic and orthotic fitments.
  • Ensure that the beneficiaries receive rehabilitation therapy as required, for example, the release of contracture and healing of stump edema before the fitment of devices.
  • Work closely with the rehabilitation team for patient treatment, follow-up, and evaluation.

Reporting and capitalization

  • Produce updated reports at regular intervals as required by the management and technical unit in terms of donor and organizational requirements.
  • Produces case stories with the rehabilitation officer as per requirement.

Mission 2: Emergency Preparedness and Response

  • Contribute to the program’s emergency preparedness initiatives, and in an emergency situation, adapt his/her working arrangements in order to contribute to an effective humanitarian response from HI.
  • Perform any other related activities as assigned by the immediate supervisor.

Educational Requirements:

  • CAT II (Category 2 Diploma degree in Prosthetics and Orthotics).

  • Communication skills in verbal and written Bangla.
  • Knowledge of disability and development issues in Bangladesh
  • Communication skills in both verbal and written Bangla are necessary.
  • Sensitized on issues related to child protection, protection of gender-based violence, etc.
  • Experienced in humanitarian context, preferably in the field of rehabilitation and inclusion.
  • Experience working in a multidisciplinary context
  • Knowledge of Chittagonian / Rohingya language is a strong asset
  • Knowledge of English and/or Burmese language;
